a close eye on this virginia campaign tonight. the reason, only a year after barack obama was the first democratic presidential candidate to take virginia, republicans now seem poised for a comeback in this state. now, paint the picture of what has gone on here the last couple of years. democrats have been on a winning streak. they have taken two previous races, two previous democratic u.s. senate races, and now only 12 months after barack obama took this state, republican bob mcdonnell does seem poised to regain the seat for the republicans. today, it was kind of a back to the future tour for mcdonnell. he toured four locations throughout the state which he been critical and key in in his life. he went to virginia beach where he used to represent that area, and finally he will turn here tonight, brian, into richmond where he has served for t past three and a half years as virginia's attorney general, hoping tonight to claim victory as the next governor of the state of virginia. >> democratic challenger creigh deeds hopes his last minute campaigning closed that double digit lead. mauree

are pleaded guilty in the case. >>> president obama has ordered a detect center at guantanamo bay shut down by this january. the deadline is fast approaching and the justice department is trying to figure out where to send the detainees. we have a closer look at one of the federal prisons being considered as a replacement for gitmo. >> reporter: about 150 miles outside of chicago is a small town of thompson with a population of about 500, the community is known for its camping and hunting. it is also home to the newest maximum security prison. in 2001, this $145 million facility currently houses 200 minimum security prisoners. the department of defense is considering transferring detainees from guantanamo bay to the prison. so federal officials are checking out the 1600 properties. they say if the deal goes through fewer than half of the 215 prisoners could be transferred here. illinois governor pat quinn says bringing the detainees could reap benefits for e town. >> i want to work with the president to make sure that we prevail over terrorism and protect our democracy and every democracy o

to the white house but they met president obama in the receiving line. the secret service says they are looking into filing charges against the couple. that is not the only twist. roz plater is working the story from the newsroom. >> reporter: we have been asking just how close this cole got to the president and now we know. apparently close enough to shake hands with him in a receiving line. a rather rare admission from the secret service on this breach of security and more signs the agency is taking this party crashing seriously. a newspaper is reporting tonight that two secret service agents showed up at the oasis about 11:00 this morning. they reportedly told a vineyard manager they were there to question tarek slahi and michaele. she said they haven't lived there in some time. the agents left this message. >> it's imperative that they speak with them and that if they didn't sit down to speak with them, we would have to take whateveraction was necessary. >> the secret service director said in part the secret service is embarrassed by the circumstance surrounding the state dinner november 24

of larger trouble for the obama democratic administration. democrats across the country. mcdonnell says for now he's going to stay out of that fight and says that any virginian wants to know what kind of governor he'll be needs to look at the campaign he ran which mcdonnell said stayed away from more divisive social issues and focused on the economy. >> the people that asked me that question already and others who will ask me i will say focus on the things, the quality of life issues, that people care about. that's what governance is all about. they are interested not in rhetoric, they are interested in results. that's the way i campaigned and that's the way i hope to govern. >> reporter: of course some of those results are going to depend on this next year. virginia is facing a budget shortfall and mcdonnell said today he wants to work with out going governor tim kaine who will craft the budget. mcdonnell will have to operate on it under his first year in office. he also says he will not promise to appoint democrats to his cabinet like tim kaine did four years ago. for his part he says
